Painting Glossary | Painting and You

Do you need to be an art historian to speak about painting with passion and ease?

Absolutely not. In such a niche field as the visual arts, a bit of curiosity and a few well‑chosen terms are enough to make quite an impression — whether over coffee or during a walk through a museum. This short glossary does not require hours of study, yet it offers something far more valuable: a language with which you can talk about paintings with lightness and humour.

You don’t need to know every era, technique or name.

It is enough to learn a handful of terms that will let you surprise a guide in any city, amuse your friends with an anecdote about tempera or texture, or simply feel more confident when you stand before a canvas and try to “read” it.

Note! The letter navigation is arranged randomly, so you can test your memory along the way (both short-term storage memory and active processing memory). You can find more memory‑boosting exercises at Yes To Human Life (in Polish).
